1930's Cromwell GT-2 Tenor Guitar Year: 1930's Brand: Cromwell Model: GT-2 Tenor Guitar Class: Guitar Scale: Owner: Jeff Hewitt Status: In Studio.
This is obviously a 1930's tenor, and it's pretty easy to recognize it was built by Gibson. The style is similar to a Gibson TG-00 or Kalamazoo KTG-11. The headstock shape is similar to the Kalamazoo guitars of that period, but the fretboard is the give away. The fret board has the classic widows peak, but it also sports a stripe inlay running the entire length. The only guitars with this inlay were Gibson built 1930's Cromwell, right down to the mix of large and small dots. Gibson built guitars for Cromwell from 1935-40. The Cromwell logo was stenciled in white on the headstock. The logo paint likely flaked on this gem. It almost looks like it was never marked.
It's original and it looks good for it's age. This guitar has had lots of cracks repaired, but they were repaired correctly a long time ago so it's not issue. The binding looks fantastic and the guitar setup and sounds great. It's a great vintage tenor.
Cromwell GT-2 Flat-top Guitars were produced from 1935-1938. The bodies were similar to the Kalamazoo KG-14, with Mahogany back, sides, neck, and white spruce top. The fretboard is Brazilian Rosewood with white center stripe, Cream single bound top (back & sound hole) and a Glued on tortoise shell pickguard. The slanted roof peak peg head sported the white stenciled Cromwell logo.
